IT’S A BIG DEAL: House Passes President Biden’s Build Back Better Act

Less than one week after President Biden signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal into law, the United States House of Representatives passed President Biden’s Build Back Better Act, moving the bill one step closer to becoming law. The Build Back Better Act will cut costs for families, create jobs, and keep the economic recovery going. In response, the West Virginia Democratic Party released the following statement.

“President Biden and Democrats took a monumental step to once again deliver for the middle class. No thanks to a single Republican in the House, the Build Back Better Act will lower costs for working families, create good-paying jobs, and cut taxes — all without adding a cent to the debt. These investments are exactly what Americans voted for when they took to the polls to elect President Biden, and the United States Senate should move quickly to get President Biden’s Build Back Better Act across the finish line.”

The Build Back Better Act will deliver for West Virginia by:

  • Cutting taxes for working families: This bill will extend the expanded Child Tax Credit increases of up to $300 per month per child and provide a tax cut of up to $1,500 for 103,000 low-wage workers in West Virginia.

  • Lowering health care costs: Closing the Medicaid coverage gap to help millions of Americans gain health insurance, extend through 2025 the American Rescue Plan’s health insurance premium reductions for those who buy coverage on their own, and help older Americans access affordable hearing care by expanding Medicare.

  • Lowering child care & family care costs: This legislation will provide access to child care for 94,170 young children per year from families earning under 2.5 times the West Virginia median income, ensuring these families pay no more than 7% of their income on high-quality child care. It will also expand access to free, high-quality preschool to more than 27,753 additional 3- and 4-year-olds per year and increase the quality of preschool for children who are already enrolled.

  • Making the largest investment to combat the climate crisis in history: cutting pollution, reducing energy costs, creating good-paying jobs with a transformational investment to ensure America leads the clean energy economy.

  • Training America’s workers for the jobs of the future: Investing in training programs that will prepare West Virginia’s workers for high-quality jobs in fast-growing sectors like public health, child care, manufacturing, IT, and clean energy.
