STATEMENT on UBB Tragedy 9 Years Ago Today

(Charleston, WV)– WVDP Chairwoman Belinda Biafore released the following statement on the tragedy 9 years ago at UBB:

Nine years ago today we lost 29 brave men in the tragedy at Upper Big Branch. These men were fathers, sons, brothers, husbands, and friends. Today, and every day, our hearts are with their families and friends as we mourn their loss and honor their memory.

This tragic disaster shouldn’t have happened and one like it should never happen again. Everyday miners risk their lives when they go to work underground so the rest of us can have electricity. No one should have to worry about making it home at the end of a workday.

We must continue to fight tooth and nail for workplace safety laws and protections. We will continue to make workplace safety our first priority and we will continue to fight to keep our workplace protection and safety laws into place no matter the pushback we face from the other side.

Today we send our love and prayers to those 29 miners and their families and we will never forget.
