The West Virginia Democratic Party on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 20, 2020

“Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but most importantly we promise to continue to fight forward.

Dr. King’s fight for justice, equality, and civil rights is just as important today as it was then. It’s imperative that we do not allow those in charge to take us back; to discriminate; to fuel hate that divides us.

We’re in a time where it feels like everything is going backward, and that includes everything from justice equality to obstacles at the ballot box, and even education.

Dr. King was a strong advocate for education and this morning we heard from our Democratic lawmakers about priorities moving forward to protect it. The City of Charleston gathered this afternoon for an honorary street dedication to Dr. King.

As we come together to honor his legacy and re-commit to uphold all that he fought for, we must remember his words.

Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'”

We must ask ourselves what are we doing as lawmakers, as representatives, as neighbors, and fellow Mountaineers to help each other.”
