West Virginia Democrats Believe Redistricting Process Should Be Fair and Communities Kept Whole
Republican leaders in the Statehouse are gerrymandering for their own political benefit
“Republican gerrymandering in the West Virginia Legislature will split up communities and unnecessarily divide cities, towns, and municipalities to benefit the political motivations of the Republican Party.
“The current redistricting maps drawn and approved by Republicans in the House and Senate will split communities apart, put neighbors in different districts, and suppress the voices and votes of minority groups in West Virginia.
“Splitting up communities and drawing lines to benefit themselves, Republicans are making it clear that their plan through redistricting is not to bring West Virginia communities together and make them stronger, but to tear them apart.
“Democrats are fighting to keep communities and counties whole so that West Virginians will be fairly represented. Keeping communities together will strengthen West Virginia and create fair representation in our Statehouse.
“Democrats believe that this process should be transparent, community members and constituents should be heard. We heard from them this morning during the public hearing. West Virginians want fair representation, not gerrymandering.
“Republicans are only drawing these maps to protect their own political power now and in the future. “
